An LA Fashionista’s Summer in New York
One Gorgeous Girl with Countless Ensembles in One City Thriving on Energy:

An LA Fashionista (2008) focuses on style and environmental influence in the world’s fashion capital, New York City. This is the girl’s first time in the overwhelming city, but with her brains and city-savvy, she is able to explore and have the time of her life.

Most people entering the Big Apple are completely and utterly overwhelmed by its fast pace and endless activities to take part in; be it the music, Broadway, shopping, dining, nightlife, recreation and so on. But this girl is able to make it on her own with a little help along the way from friends and strangers, as well as unintentional trips in the wrong direction!

This fashion student has all she needs to make it big in the city: the clothes, shoes, style, intelligence, and most importantly, the attitude. Being able to balance work and play is important in this girl’s life, but this series is primarily focused on play: shopping, strolling, eating out, dancing, with a little but of study in between. She represents the fun loving, determined, girl next door willing to go out on a whim and take a bite out of the Big Apple.

Being passionate about fashion is what inspired this collection of images. I am especially interested in the portraiture side of fashion photography as well as the stylistic element of creating the set and choosing the hair, makeup, and clothing for the shoot. This shooting experience allowed me to uncover what really brings out my emotions in photography which gave me the realization that I am truly impassioned by clothing as a work of art in photography.

Long Island Citayyy

Wow. Industrial area to the max here in Long Island City... I didn't see many people, or "moving" cars for that matter. The city had almost a creepy vibe because of the lack of movement and habitation (maybe that was just b/c I was coming from Manhattan?) It was an interesting place though with perfect skyline views of the city and some great graffiti. I loved the whole wall dedicated to the bicycles, "recycle a bicycle"; it was very cute and definitely looked as if some young school children painted it. The most amazing part of the day was going to Keily Anderson-Staley's studio to see her make personalized ambrotypes for some students in my class. She had a very beautiful portfolio of one of a kind photographs that are a work of art in themselves. I was inspired by her work on glass and tin; it was impressive to find an artist, especially, a photographer, who stayed true to her medium, not moving on with technology. She even said she was taking a workshop that night to further her knowledge in the field of ambrotypes and tintypes-- now she's even more of a master!

Café Life

This café was amazing; it had this feel like it was straight out of Paris, yet it was just a block or two away from class. I adored the yellow walls and the paintings that were hung up throughout the restaurant. The giant windows looking into a courtyard filled with flowers weren't so bad either ;)

Lower Manhattan

Ground Zero. I remember going to see the World Trade Center on my first trip to New York City in June of 2001, 3 months prior to 9/11. Last week, on my fifth trip to the big apple, this area couldn't be more different, not just the space where the two buildings stood, but people's attitudes were different. There is still this sense of despair, pain, and sadness, which is completely understandable, myself included. I felt a strong emotional connection to this space when shooting, more than anywhere else before. Looking through the photos afterwards I had chills down my spine as I paired them together as well as seeing my classmates images... tears were welling up in my eyes. The black and white image of the faces hits me the hardest; it is a poster of some of the firefighters who died because of September 11th.

This photograph is amusing; I am taking the exact same picture from inside the shop as a man outside the store looking in. I can imagine his photo with me in it looking as strange as my photo with him in it. hah... There were so many more objects I wanted to take photos of in that store (Jeffrey), but if they were to catch me it would have been bad news because I was already warned when I came into the store "NOT TO USE MY CAMERA". Why do you think that is? If I wanted to steal the designs I could just look online to style.com or he designer's website. Why do stores freak out SO much?!

West Village/ Meatpacking Dist.

Oh the village! When I think of the West Village I sigh, I love the area so much and find myself wandering there every single day. SO many colours found in unknown places: the street lights, the graffiti, signs, the river, the taxis, the buildings... There is so much contrast, it was a joy to shoot. Also, the people watching is incredible, especially those modelesque girls sauntering down the coblestones in 4 inch heels. Loved it because I was able to incorporate my love for fashion photography ;)

West Village Fashionistas

My favourite place in Manhattan is the West Village/ Meatpacking District. The cobblestone gives the area this unique old-fashioned feel, yet it is packed with hip designer boutiques such as Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, La Perla, Jeffrey New York, Scoop NYC etc, as well as 100's of restaurants and bars hidden between the cross-streets. After photographing hundreds of "fashionable" places I walked towards the pier and snapped some beautiful shots of the river as the sun was going down. The pier is an interesting place, reminiscent of San Francisco; I loved the logs in the water that made my photographs visually appealing because of their pattern. It was a great day photographing the village, but I hope to go deeper and discover even more...

Harlem Bubblegum

This was my first shot in Harlem. I loved the bubblegum and candy machines because colour always entices me. As I looked at the background I noticed the run-down convenient store and all its colours. The paper trash bag in the middle of the candy machines, as well as the locks on the machine and door, represent Harlem and its deterioration and high crime levels. My favourite part of this photograph is the man's expression on the left; he looks so interested in what I am doing photographing what looks to be such a familiar environment for him... I can see him thinking "what does this girl find so fascinating about this storefront?" Also, as I walked by he said something along the lines of "everyone always goes for the bubblegum". I laughed because it was the first thing I was drawn to.

Harlem

My very first trip to Harlem! Not what I was expecting at all, at least I didn't find it as "sketchy" as its stereotype supposes. Although I angered many of the residents with my photography, I came into no conflicts. This photograph describes the area as well as my experience in Harlem perfectly; the juxtaposition of the limo against the truck, the limo is moving while the truck is still. The wealthy are moving into Harlem and the area is starting to clean up so this photograph represents this. And how does this photograph signify my experience in Harlem? I looked SO out of place wearing my little dress, big sunglasses,sandals, giant bag, and an expensive camera around my neck. It was very amusing. The next photograph was taken by a friend that shows this juxtaposition really well...
